Extending Koivu

Postby Mike Berg » Mon Sep 11, 2017 2:30 pm

Should the Wild extend Koivu before he turns 35? Should they extend him at all?

Personally, I'd see if he's willing to take a hometown discount (say, 5-4-3-2-1, comes out to 3 per) to stay after this year. If so, extend him before March so that he's not on a 35+ contract.

What's your take?

If I was the Wild I would tread very lightly here. Most guys in Koivu's spot get at least one of money or term. I would be hesitant to give him much more than one year, which may be an offer that compels Mikko to tell the Wild to pound sand.

Then again, the Wild doesn't really have anyone else that can do what he does. Play in all situations, win big face-offs, play a 200 foot game. I'm not the hugest Koivu fan, but I can recognize he brings a pretty good overall game to the table.

I mean, there's less risk if they can sign him before he turns 35, though, right?

Why couldn't you give him term (5 years gets him to 40) and reasonable $$$?

I'm just now coming to from the convulsions that set in after reading Mikko getting 5 years to age 40. Lemme think about that for a sec.

UMMMMM, NO.

Depends on the price. Bigger term usually means a lower AAV, and if you get him before he hits 35, the contract is released if he retires.

5Y/15Mil isn't that bad a hit.

I will bare-knuckle fist-fight anyone who thinks keeping Koivu around until age 40 is a good idea.

Fist. Fight.

I can't go 5 years for Mikko, either. But if he'd take 3 at $3-4 I might be able to get on board with that. Basically the Staal deal. Looking forward to the Dubs-Bergy cage match!

Plot twist, I'll bro hug him and he'll get so flustered he'll forget to fight me.

I'd say 2/11 is a pretty fair deal, now that it's signed.

I'm probably okay with it. Still hoping JEEK or Kunin develop to take up the flag for many of the things Koivu does now that no other Wild centers can do.

I'm not debating they had to re-sign him. I'm okay with 2 years. I would have preferred a smaller cap hit on the new deal. I'll live with the cap hit he got.
